Huawei Y8p review

In the budget segment, to which the Huawei Y8p belongs, competition is traditionally the fiercest. Every manufacturer strives to create something super-cool that it can sell at the lowest possible price. There are companies that succeed in this mission, for example Samsung, Redmi... Now Huawei is also attracting attention in the face of the Huawei Y8p.

Design

The Huawei Y8p is a true flagship for this price class. Glass is used on the front and back, and around the perimeter we see a plastic board. It is almost impossible to distinguish it from the metal. Overall, the smartphone lies beautifully in the palm of the user, which is also contributed by its modest thickness - almost 7.8 mm.

It makes a good impression that it is difficult to leave fingerprints on the Huawei Y8p housing. Even the screen remains clean, and fingers move smoothly on it. You'll notice this effect most in the versions with light casing. In black and emerald, fingerprints are more visible.

The dimensions of the Huawei Y8p are 157.4 x 73.2 x 7.75 mm at a weight of 163 grams.

Display

In the Huawei Y8p, the manufacturer has opted for a 6.3-inch OLED screen, whose main task is to accommodate a built-in fingerprint scanner at the bottom. The display renders colors well, but it can't reach the level of AMOLED.

The screen resolution is 1080 x 2400 pixels (417 ppi). The aspect ratio is 20:9. The screen recognises up to 10 simultaneous touches. It is also equipped with automatic brightness adjustment.

Performance

The smartphone is based on HiSilicon Kirin 710, consisting of 8 cores clocked up to 2 GHz. Mali-G51 takes care of the graphics. RAM is 4/6 GB and flash memory is 128 GB. A nanoSD of up to 256 GB can be inserted.

With the Kirin 710F, the Huawei Y8p handles virtually any game perfectly, including PUBG Mobile at high graphics parameters. This result compares favourably with that of the Huawei Y6p, whose chipset is geared towards moderate power saving rather than high-performance 3D gaming.

The device is equipped with a facial recognition feature that will keep your personal data safe. Android 10 and EMUI 10.1 user interface is used as the programming platform. Google services are absent due to the conflict with the US. In their place, the Huawei AppGallery app store is provided.

Cameras

The Huawei Y8p has 3 rear cameras, but only two of them are actually there to highlight - the main 48 MP (f/1.8, 26 mm) and the wide-angle 8 MP (f/2.4). The third module is a 2-megapixel (f/2.4) and is responsible for measuring the depth of the background when taking portrait photos. Many flagships these days manage without such sensors. This is exactly what we see in the front camera of the Huawei Y8p, which is single and is capable of blurring the background.

The main camera shoots in 12 MP resolution by default. We recommend using 48 MP, then you'll get more detail. Shooting during the dark part of the day is not one of the camera's strong points. To improve the situation, the manufacturer has provided a special "Night" mode. A hold of 3-4 seconds will guarantee you a good photo with saturated colors. The second camera, which covers an angle of 120 degrees, will help you fit more objects into one photo.

The Huawei Y8p is only capable of recording video in FHD resolution at 30/60 frames per second. 4K support and stabilization is not available. This is an odd decision, as the company's previous products feature these, as do quite a few competing models.

Autonomous operation

Underneath the Huawei Y8p's body, there is a non-removable battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh. On the one hand, this is not much, but thanks to good software optimization, the device serves a day and a half and even two without a problem.

This smartphone does not have support for fast charging technology. There is a 10 watt charger in the package. The charge recovery is as follows - in 30 minutes you will get 28%, in an hour - 54%, and after 2.5 hours - 100%.

Conclusion

Overall, the Huawei Y8p is a nice device. It is characterized by a stylish design, quality screen, not bad cameras and NFC. Google services are absent, but you can do without them.

Pros:

  • Stylish looks;
  • Quality craftsmanship;
  • Excellent screen;
  • Long autonomous operation;
  • Affordable Price.

Cons:

  • Slippery casing, recommend using a case;
  • Substandard nanoSD memory card.
