Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G review

In 2020, Samsung has decided to jump from the anniversary Galaxy S10 to the token Galaxy S20. We see a similar jump not only in the model name, but also in what it offers. The S20 series immediately catches the eye with a 64 MP camera, 8K video shooting, 120 Hz display, 5G support! And with the S20 Ultra, we also have 100x zoom. No one has ever offered that before.

Design

The South Korean company Samsung is gradually shaping the design of its smartphones into a unified style. The fashion with the rectangular camera block and a notch in the center of the display was set by the Galaxy Note 10 lite, Galaxy A51, A71 models. Now we see them in the flagship devices.

All three 2020 models are different sizes. If the s20 and s20+ perfectly match the average dimensions of the competitors' flagships, we have serious gauges in the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The device is about an inch larger than the Galaxy S10+ and half an inch larger than its fellow S20+. The increase in diagonal has resulted in a small increase in the width of the pair.

All in all, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is slightly narrower than the 6.8-inch Note 10 Plus and the 6.7-inch S10 5G.

The 6.9-inch diagonal screen is the largest in all of Samsung's smartphones. The device can't be described as gigantic, but managing it without a second hand will be a challenge. You will definitely like the fact that the display takes up almost the entire front surface. The camera is inset into it.

The shape of the casing is the same throughout the entire series of cameras. In general, last year's design is repeated - a couple of glasses with Gorilla Glass 6 protection and a metal frame around them. The corners of the phones are rounded, similar to the side edges. The rear camera unit has moved from the center to the top left corner.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is devoid of an audio port. It connects to headphones via Bluetooth or UBS Type-C.

Colors

If the smaller models in the series are presented in three colors, their bigger brother, the Galaxy S20 Ultra, has received only two color choices: gray and black.

The logic goes like this. The device is designed for a category of people who prefer classic colors rather than the playful pink, sky blue, etc.

Waterproof

In the Galaxy S20 Ultra, it is ensured through the IP68 standard. With this phone, you can easily swim in fresh water up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes. The manufacturer does not recommend dropping the device in seawater or in a swimming pool.

Display

The screen diagonal of this exciting smartphone from 2020 amounts to 6.9 inches. The resolution of the display is 3200x1400 pixels. The aspect ratio - 20:9. In the settings menu there is an option to set a more battery-friendly resolution - HD+ or FullHD+.

Taking up practically the entire front panel, the screen is based on Dynamic SuperAMOLED technology and HDR 10+. The Galaxy S20 Ultra's colour rendering is reference-quality. To talk about a qualitative change compared to the predecessor S10, it is difficult.

What is new in this model is the screen operation with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This makes scrolling smoother, like an animation. Even in the Galaxy S20 Ultra model, however, you'll have to do limited work in this mode. In a resolution no higher than FullHD.

Performance

To ensure maximum smartphone performance is called the new 64-bit 8-core Exynos 990 processor from Samsung. It is created on a 7-nm process technology. The operating frequency of some cores reaches 2.73 GHz. The Galaxy S20 Ultra is expected to feature the Snapdragon 865 in variants for some markets. To compare this development of Samsung with its analogues from competitors does not make sense. The difference in performance speed for the naked eye can not be detected.

RAM is solid. Galaxy S20 Ultra has 12 GB and 16 GB standard LPDDR5 in the maximum variant.

The internal memory is 128 GB, but there is a 512 GB variant as well. With the help of a memory card, the user can expand the storage by 1 TB.

Camera

The camera capabilities of the Galaxy S20 Ultra are visibly different from the other representatives in the series. Even the front camera has been given a resolution of 40 MP. Despite lowering the pixel size to 0.7 µm, Tetra Binning technology allows them to be merged, increasing the size to 1.4 µm with a drop in resolution to 10 MP. As a result, the frame is obtained with the same resolution as the "brothers", but better detail, which will be beneficial in dark shooting conditions.

In the block of main cameras stands out the wide-angle sensor with a resolution of 108 MP and a pixel size of 0.8 microns. In the event of a light deficit, the pixels are automatically regrouped into one large 2.4 µm. The aperture is fixed at f/1.8. Optical stabilization is available.

The ultrawide-angle camera has been given a resolution of 12 MP, the tele module - 48 MP. It has also received optical stabilization and can increase the pixel size up to 1.6 µm. This lens has received a hybrid 10x optical zoom and 100x digital. This capability the company itself has described as cosmic.

The fourth module is used to determine the depth of the frame. It allows to take pictures with blurred background in portrait mode.

Samsung is proud to announce that its flagships are the first in the world that can shoot video at 8K resolution. The frame rate amounts to 24 per second. Each frame can be saved in 33 MP photography format. There is a possibility of simultaneous shooting with the three rear cameras. We are talking about the "Multi-frame" mode. In this case, artificial intelligence will suggest you the best option.

Autonomous operation

The increase in screen diagonal has made it necessary to change the battery capacity. Galaxy S20 Ultra has received 5000 mAh. They are quite enough for the device to work around the clock in maximum power consumption mode. I.e. 5G enabled while running the display at 120 Hz. In usual operating scenarios, the user can expect 2-3 days of autonomy from 100% charge.

Superfast charging of Galaxy S20 Ultra is possible with the help of a dedicated 45W block. This model also supports 15W fast wireless charging. The now familiar PowerShare feature is present for wireless charging of headphones, watches and other accessories.

Conclusion

Why choose the Galaxy S20 Ultra? For a thousand reasons. This smartphone is the latest scream of fashion and set an exciting tone for 2020.
