Samsung Galaxy S7 review

In the Galaxy S6, the South Koreans implemented several bold solutions that were not warmly received by all users. The manufacturer listened to the criticism and brought back a memory card slot in the Galaxy S7. In addition, the flagship has received the traditional performance boost, more RAM and a new camera that, although lower resolution, shoots much better in the dark. These are just some of the advantages that the Galaxy S7 offers.

Design

Judging by everything, in Samsung have taken into account the successful design of its previous flagship and therefore in the Galaxy S7 we find almost no changes. The front and back panel are made of glass. There is a metal frame around the perimeter of the body. The most noticeable innovation in the housing are the beveled edges of the rear panel, thanks to which the device lies pleasantly in the hand.

The lens of the main camera protrudes only slightly. To the right of it is an LED flash and a heart rate sensor and SpO2 - a sensor that reads the oxygen saturation of the blood.

Both panels of the Galaxy S7 are protected by Corning - Gorilla Glass 4. The front panel has a quality oleophobic coating, thanks to which the user leaves virtually no traces of his fingerprints. The same cannot be said about the quality of the coating on the rear panel.

Display

The Galaxy S7 is equipped with a Super AMOLED display with a huge resolution - 2560 x 1400, for its time. The pixel density is around 577 ppi. The picture is perfectly realistic. The contrast and maximum brightness are also commendable.

As in other Samsung devices with AMOLED displays, color saturation adjustment is possible in the Galaxy S7. The maximum saturation shows everything the matrix is capable of, while the minimum will appeal to users who are used to IPS displays.

The adaptive screen brightness adjustment works excellent. You can adjust the brightness manually from the notification panel. The smartphone will remember your choice and in the future will choose your option under the appropriate conditions.

Another new feature in the Galaxy S7 is Always on Display. Even when the smartphone is locked, different information is displayed on the screen - for example, time, calendar, etc. Thanks to AMOLED technology, this feature has virtually no impact on the device's autonomous runtime.

Performance

Samsung offers several versions of the Galaxy S7, including one with a processor from Qualcomm. The version of the Samsung G930F model that is destined for sale in Europe is equipped with a 64-bit Samsung Exynos 8890 Octa chipset. It includes four Samsung Mongoose cores clocked at 2.4 GHz, four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.3 GHz and an ARM Mali-T880 MP12 graphics accelerator.

Additionally, the Galaxy S7 has received 4 GB of LPDDR4 standard RAM and 32/64 GB of UHS 2.0 standard internal storage. If needed, the memory can be increased with a memory card up to 200 GB.

Not much words are needed about the performance of the Galaxy S7. This is one of the world's fastest and most powerful smartphones for its time. It handles all games and other tasks without problems.

One of the interesting features in the new flagship is the fingerprint scanner embedded in the Home button. It works without any delay. To turn on the screen and unlock the device, it is enough to hold the button for no more than a second. The location of the scanner on the front panel is among the best possible solutions.

Measurement of heart rate, SpO2 and stress level is done via the dedicated S Health app. In it you can keep a log of your weight, physical exertion, etc.

Galaxy S7 uses a micro USB port. In an age of mass transition to a more convenient standard, this is a bit of an odd decision.

Cameras

As the main camera, the Galaxy S7 uses a 12-megapixel Sony IMX260 module. This sensor was designed specifically for Samsung. It is not sold on other manufacturers. Compared to the previous version of the flagship, the camera resolution in the Galaxy S7 has been reduced, but this has not led to weaker results. On the contrary, through optimization, the phone now shoots even better in the dark. Another advantage of the sensor is the improved phase autofocus, in which all pixels of the matrix are activated.

The Galaxy S7's main camera handles all subjects perfectly, including shooting in low ambient light.

Separately, we must say a few words about the Panorama mode. In it, several full-size photos are "merged", and the final resolution of these images is 38 MP.

With the Galaxy S7 in hand, you can shoot video at up to Ultra HD resolution. The maximum frame rate for the standard shooting mode is 60 frames per second. This is achieved at Full HD resolution. In slow-motion mode, the speed increases to 260 frames per second. Then the resolution drops to HD.

Thanks to optical stabilization, the videos are clear and smooth.

Samsung has also worked on the front camera. It has a 5 MP resolution and allows the user to take impressive selfies. Various face "beautifiers" are also present, correcting skin color and texture.

Autonomous operation

The Galaxy S7 is equipped with a 3000 mAh battery. It is not removable. The manufacturer has provided the presence of Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging technology. It allows the Galaxy S7 to charge up to 60% in just half an hour. The smartphone also supports wireless charging on two standards - Qi and PMA. We should also mention the extreme power saving mode.

Samsung has optimized the power consumption of the smartphone. It now provides a full day of autonomous operation with just over 4 hours of active screen mode. If you don't use the Galaxy S7 that actively, you can count on a day and a half and even two.

The smartphone's continuous load tests are also impressive. In games at medium brightness, you'll need to recharge the Galaxy S7 after 10 hours, and if you're watching video at maximum brightness - over 14 hours.

Conclusion

South Korean company Samsung continues to maintain its leadership position among Android phone manufacturers. Galaxy S7, like other flagships of the family, use the latest technology and offers excellent performance. New features and customization options further make the Galaxy S7 an attractive choice. Of particular note is the camera, which takes perfect pictures both day and night.

Pros:

  • Excellent power;
  • Bright AMOLED display;
  • Quality photos;
  • Many interesting new features.

Minuses:

  • No USB Type-C port.
