Tecno Phantom X review

Tecno is one of those Chinese smartphone manufacturers that works hard on earning the trust of the consumer. That's why every one of their new models excites the imagination. In June 2021, the Phantom series of smartphones received a new addition in the form of the Tecno Phantom X. This model can only tentatively be described as a flagship. Rather, it has the capabilities of a Xiaomi mid-range device.

Tecno Phantom X has received a MediaTek Helio G95 processor and a screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The screen is large and Super AMOLED. Also impressive at first glance are the fast charging technology, the telephoto zoom lens and the 4K video capture.

Design

It's obvious that Tecno has spared no expense in the design and quality of the materials used to make the Tecno Phantom X. There is an attempt to make the device different from the dozens of models on the market that are almost the same.

The back panel is rounded at the edges and has a structure with vertical features. The coating itself is Gorilla Glass 5. Almost no fingerprints remain on it. However, it feels slightly slippery.

Unconventional looks the camera module, which is on two levels and slightly protrudes above the level of the housing. The latter is relatively large - almost 9 cm. For some users it will be awkward to hold in a pocket. The main cameras are three, with a large LED flash and a laser autofocus sensor placed next to them.

Tecno Phantom X is available in several colors - blue and orange-sky blue. Both solutions are attractive with their spectacular gradient.

Display

The smartphone features a display with impressive specs. Its diagonal is 6.7 inches. The matrix is Super AMOLED and the refresh rate is 90 Hz. We are talking about a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels at an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The only problem is the low brightness. In manual mode it reaches a not bad 405 nits. However, there is no automatic adjustment. You may notice that on a sunny day the brightness may be insufficient.

Performance

The Tecno Phantom X is equipped with the MediaTek Helio G95, which is due out in 2020. The processor is octa-core and consists of two performance cores clocked up to 2.05 GHz, and six power-efficient ones clocked up to 2.0 GHz. The graphics are handled by a Mali-G76 MC4 chip.

Tecno Phantom X is available in a modification with plenty of RAM - 8 GB, and 256 GB of storage, which fortunately can be increased at any time using the memory card slot provided by the manufacturer.

Cameras

The main advantage of the Tecno Phantom X is the main camera, which has a resolution of 50 MP. The lens is the Samsung S5KGN1 and is already familiar to the user as it is present in the more expensive Vivo X60 Pro+. It is assisted by a laser autofocus sensor, a 13-megapixel telephoto lens with optical zoom and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera with a 120-degree viewing angle. The selfie camera is dual. It consists of a 48-megapixel main sensor and an 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor. The latter has an angle of view of only 105 degrees, which by today's standard can hardly be described as a perfect solution for serious group shots.

Tecno's Phantom X cameras work with the help of artificial intelligence. You can turn it off at any time. It adds its own settings when it recognizes scenes.

The telephoto lens will pleasantly surprise you with saturated colors, high detail and almost complete absence of noise. The 2x zoom allows you to get not bad shots of distant objects. The night mode also pleases. The quality in dark conditions is not inferior to the results of flagship smartphones.

As for the front camera, the shots with it look slightly pale. With the Tecno Phantom X in hand, you can take maximum quality 4K videos at 30 frames per second. A slow motion mode is also available. You don't have electronic stabilization when creating 4K.

Autonomous operation

The Tecno Phantom X has a fully standard battery for the mid-price range. Its capacity is 4700 mAh and provides over 14 hours of full time dedicated to web browsing or 16.5 hours of video watching. The phone comes with a 33W charger. It gives you fast charge recovery. For example, in 30 minutes you can expect a new 70%.

Conclusion

Tecno Phantom X is in many respects a good modern smartphone. It sees improvements and a good analysis of user requirements. The screen is excellent, although it lacks enough brightness here and there. The cameras are at a good level, as is the performance.
