Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro Review

Xiaomi stays true to itself and releases two Redmi Note per year. With this app, how can there be a break for competitors? There just isn't. The Chinese manufacturer tries its best to offer mouth-watering smartphones combining a good balance of price and features. The Redmi Note 8 Pro with its 64-megapixel main camera is an ambitious proposition.

Design

This Xiaomi model is not only powerful but also, as you can see, cute. It's common for Redmi Note family devices to be large and unremarkable. This trend is gradually changing.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro is big, there's no argument about that. Its display diagonal is 6.53 inches. The bezels are minimal. This is a big and heavy device and you should know that it fits a man's palm. That is why it is often preferred by men. The popularity of other large models, including some iPhones, among ladies gives chances of the Redmi Note 8 Pro being chosen by them as well.

In short, this model is the typical modern large smartphone. However, it is not devoid of a certain grace. The white version with silver elements looks particularly fresh. A more summery colour solution is the green Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Both the front and rear panel of the model is covered with tempered Gorilla Glass 5 protective glass.

Like any smartphone with a glass back and curved edges, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is a slick device. It is recommended to wear it in a case.

Display

Compared to its sibling Redmi Note 7 Pro, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has received a larger display. As mentioned earlier, 6.53 inches diagonal. Its predecessor has only 6.3 inches. It's curious how long the fashion of constantly increasing the screen size will continue. Will foldable smartphones put an end to it? The question remains open, but we think we'll find out soon enough.

In the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the company has opted for a traditional IPS matrix screen with a resolution of 2340x1080 pixels. The aspect ratio is 19.5:9. The pixel density is 395 ppi. It's not a standout metric, but it's not disappointing. The picture is smooth enough. It looks satisfactory. The oleophobic coating is at a good level.

The maximum measured brightness of the Redmi Note 8 Pro's display is 495 cd/m2.

Performance

Xiaomi has taken an interesting step. In this Redmi Note, it has not opted for a Qualcomm platform but a Mediatek one. According to experts, there is logic - the Helio G90T system is classified as an above-average platform class and for a modest price is capable of delivering a level of performance that gives the Redmi Note 8 Pro a noticeable advantage over its direct competitors in the market.

The platform consists of 8 cores: two ARM Cortex-A76 clocked at 2.05 GHz for the processes that require the most resources, and six ARM Cortex-A55 clocked at 2.0 GHz responsible for power efficiency.

The graphics in the Redmi Note 8 Pro is handled by the ARM Mali-G76 MC4 subsystem clocked at 800 MHz. It should be noted that this is a version of the Helio G90 platform, which has increased clock speeds of both the main cores and graphics. It allows the device to run a variety of modern games, even the heavier ones.

Redmi Note 8 Pro cannot be termed as a gaming smartphone, but for its price range, it offers powerful specs.

This model is marketed in two RAM variants: 6 or 8 GB LPDDR4X. For a smartphone in this price range, that's a lot. The internal memory is 64 or 128 GB. You can increase it using a microSD card. It is placed in place of the second SIM-card.

Cameras

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has four cameras, but in practice one of them is the most important - the one with the Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor, which has a resolution of 64 MP. By default, the smartphone shoots on the principle of other phones using the Quad Bayer system. That is, with a resolution four times smaller - 16 MP. The 64 MP shooting mode is activated separately. The lens is devoid of optical stabilization, but has a satisfactorily high light intensity - f/1.9.

The other three cameras are less impressive. The user gets a wide-angle module with an 8-megapixel sensor and a lens with f/2.2 luminosity and no autofocus; a dedicated 2-megapixel macro camera with f/2.2 luminosity and large pixels (1.7 µm). The fourth camera is for shake mode only. Wide-angle shooting is to be commended.

With the Redmi Note 8 Pro in hand, you can record video in 4K resolution at up to 30fps or in FullHD at up to 60fps. You get a slow-motion mode with up to 960fps, but in quality it falls short of the results achieved by Sony and Huawei flagships.

The front camera isn't bad. It is 20-megapixel, the lens has a brightness of f/2.0. There is no autofocus or flash. It handles blur in portrait mode excellently.

Autonomous operation

The big battery is noticeable in the Redmi Note 8 Pro. No way - a 6.5-inch diagonal display consumes a lot of power. The battery capacity is 4500 mAh. The device demonstrates a satisfactory level of autonomous work. With standard work with it (that is, do not overdo it with games, etc.) the smartphone will serve you for a whole day.

In continuous HD video playback mode with maximum brightness, updates and notifications on, the Redmi Note 8 Pro will need a recharge after 10 hours.

Charging the phone is done via USB Type-C port. Good news is the availability of Quick Charge 4 (18W) fast charging technology. However, you get a standard 10W adapter in the bundle, so you'll need to buy another one if you want to make full use of this feature.

It takes about two hours to fully charge the battery.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro is a device that looks good. If you want a big screen, this is what you are looking for. You also get four cameras, one of which is a 64-megapixel camera. To date, this device is in the versatile category - it offers a little bit of everything at an affordable price.

Pros:

  • Nice design;
  • Powerful hardware platform;
  • Good photo quality - from both front and rear cameras;
  • Large and bright display;
  • Attractive Price.

Cons:

  • Either a second SIM or a memory card;
  • No adapter for the fast charging technology included;
  • Not protected against moisture and dust.
