Design

The colors of Huawei Mate 20 Pro speak of a good plan on the part of the designers. They have come up with both classic and extravagant variants to suit the taste of a wide range of users. The bold choice of colors is complemented by a laconic body design. To prevent accidental dropping, the latter is fitted with a special coating.

On the rear panel, the eye is drawn to a triple camera located in the centre of the top. The frame is made of metal, which contributes to the strength of the entire construction. To this we must add protection against dust and water getting into the housing. It is IP68 standard.

Display

One of the strengths of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro flagship is that almost its entire front surface is occupied by a 6.39-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 1440 x 3120. The picture quality is magnificent and is due to the high resolution and pixel density per inch - 538. The display conveys colours in a perfect way and is bright enough. You can enjoy photos, videos and various applications to the fullest. In sunlight, the screen remains legible.

At the top of the display, you will find a familiar notch where the front camera is located. A new feature is the presence of a fingerprint scanner just below the screen glass. In this way, the manufacturer has saved space and made using the Huawei Mate 20 Pro even more convenient.

The screen quality of the smartphone is at the level of Samsung and Apple. You have the AlwaysOn Display mode available. It allows you to always see what time it is, whether you have notifications and other useful information.

Performance

This Huawei model is the first in the world to run on the 7-nm Kirin 980 processor. It has received 8 computing cores divided into three groups. The first one has four Cortex-A55 cores, which are responsible for the economical performance when the smartphone is not loaded with heavy programs and operations. Thus, the power consumption is optimally reduced. The other two powerful Cortex-A76 cores operate at lower frequencies. They come into action when the workload increases. When you max load the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, then the third group of cores is activated. They operate at increased frequencies.

Huawei's technology is such that the three groups of cores are managed by artificial intelligence. As a result, the smartphone will leave you satisfied. The applications will launch quickly, and the operation process will be smooth and without any bottlenecks.

As for the interface, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro runs on Android 9 Pie operating system and a proprietary EMUI 9.0 interface.

The Mali-G76 MP10 GPU is responsible for the graphics. RAM can be 6 or 8 GB depending on the configuration. They go with 128 or 256 GB storage respectively. You have the option to expand it with a nanoSD memory card.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a good choice for gamers. With such screen size and performance, it handles even the toughest games without a problem.

Cameras

One of the merits of the flagship is its triple camera. It was developed with the help of Leica. It consists of three modules. The main one is 40-megapixel and wide-angle. It is complemented by an 8-megapixel telephoto lens and a 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.

For optimum photo and video quality, the company has relied on artificial intelligence. Thanks to it, the camera can not only determine the contours of the subject during shooting, but also recognize the subject itself. It's capable of identifying up to 10 objects - whether you're in video recording mode or shooting.

Artificial intelligence support is also useful in that the technology can recognize over 1500 scenarios, automatically selecting brightness settings, contrast, etc.

With the Huawei Mate 20 Pro in hand, you'll also be taking exciting macro shots. For this, we recommend using the supermacro mode. The 20-megapixel lens is responsible for it, allowing you to shoot from 2.5 cm away.

As for the front camera, it's a single, 24-megapixel one. With it, you can be sure of getting detailed pictures.

About the photo capabilities of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, we can conclude the following: daylight photos are bright, saturated and highly detailed. However, the full potential of the model is revealed at night. This is when the embedded technologies reveal their full potential to capture quality footage in the most challenging conditions. Optical stabilisation also contributes to this.

In terms of video, you can expect a resolution of up to 4K at 30fps and FullHD at 40fps.

Autonomous operation

Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a battery with a capacity of 4200 mAh. Given the power efficiency of the processor, you can count on over a day of autonomous operation under heavy use. Fast charging technology is available in this model. With it, you can go from 0 to 70% charge in just half an hour.

Huawei has also provided support for the wireless charging feature as well as the reversible one. Thus, Huawei Mate 20 Pro can be used as an external battery for your favorite devices.

Interesting functions and features

This Huawei model supports DisplayPort Alt Mode for USB Type-C - you can transmit sound and images to an external device using the USB port.

For anyone looking to spare their eyesight, having an eye protection mode is a good perk. When turned on, the display emits a warmer light.

If you're excited about keeping fit, there's the Health app available on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Conclusion

The smartphone is expensive but technically advanced. It will win you over with a top platform, a modern look and an excellent AMOLED screen with exciting dimensions. To this we must add very good cameras and superb sound.

The maximum communication capabilities of the device and the fast charging feature are disarming for any young user.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is also irresistible due to the fact that it combines pros of well-known models on the market. For example, its screen width is comparable to that of the Meizu 16, and its rounded edges make reference to the Samsung Edge.

Competitors

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has enough merits to please you from the first moment you read a little more about it. If you're looking for a benchmark, though, take a look at the Galaxy S9+. In case you're on the fence about buying a device with a stylus, we recommend the Note 9. On a bigger budget, take a few minutes to explore the Huawei P30 Pro, too.
