Samsung Galaxy S10e Review

Samsung has a habit of releasing two similar models that don't differ much from each other. In 2019, they are joined by another variant. It doesn't carry the "plus" or "minus" addition, but is titled Samsung S10e. With this move, the manufacturer wants to solve several problems at once.

For years, all Samsung flagships have been characterized by curved screens. For a certain portion of smartphone users, these displays are inconvenient. They repeatedly reiterated that they would like the same features, but in a compact housing and with a flat screen. It is for this audience that the Samsung S10e has appeared on the market. It offers a flat screen! It represents a partially simplified flagship, in which a number of technologies have been removed, but the pros of more advanced models have been retained. For example, there is no fingerprint sensor under the screen. It is replaced by a side sensor built into the power button.

This is also a curtsy to people who do not like new technology, but want to use the usual functions.

The bright colours of the Samsung S10e show that the device is designed primarily for a youthful audience. People who are looking for a balanced device come second.

Design

We'll start with the main thing, namely the colours of the Samsung S10e. They are four: pearl, onyx, aquamarine and citrus.

The body is made of metal and glass (Corning Gorilla Glass 6). The colour layer is located under the protective glass. The smartphone thus impresses with a play of colours in different ambient lighting. This effect is strongest in the aquamarine and citrus models.

Why is Corning Gorilla Glass 6 important to the user? This is Corning's latest generation of protective glass and features high resistance to falls.

The Samsung S10e is quite compact. It looks small and feels great in the palm. Its dimensions are 142.2 x 69.9 x 7.9 mm at a weight of 150 grams. In comparison, the dimensions and weight of several competing models on the market are:

  • Galaxy S10 - 149.9 x 70.4 x 7.8 mm, 157 grams
  • Galaxy S10+ - 157.6 x 74.1 x 7.8 mm, 175 grams
  • iPhone Xr - 150.9x75.7x8.3 mm, 194 grams
  • iPhone X - 143.6x70.9x7.7 mm, 174 grams

As you can see, the Samsung S10e is as close as possible in dimensions to the iPhone X.

Samsung's flagships feature water protection. This feature is also present in the Samsung S10e. The standard is IP68. You can swim with the phone, use it in the bathroom, etc. Fresh water is harmless to the device, but any other avoid.

Display

Unlike the other models in the series, the display resolution here is only FullHD+. All other features are retained - color rendering, brightness up to 800 nits. The technical parameters of the screen are as follows: 5.8 inches, dynamic AMOLED, automatic brightness adjustment. Samsung S10e has two RGB sensors. They are responsible for assessing the light level. They adjust the brightness of the picture according to the environmental conditions.

The front camera is in the screen. It is cleverly hidden there and does not obtrude on the eyes.

In the phone settings, the user can adjust the color temperature. Among the additional settings there is a sensitivity mode - in case you want to operate the phone while wearing gloves.

The night mode is solved differently, compared to previous models. The Good Night Routine mode has appeared. It automatically adjusts the phone to your preferences for reading in bed or watching videos, other content, etc.

Performance

The Samsung S10e is based on the Exynos 9820 chipset or Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Either way, it's a high-performance solution. The smartphone shows a very fast performance. The interface works smoothly and without slowdown. This is also helped by 6 GB of RAM. The internal storage is 126 GB and can be expanded with a memory card up to 512 GB.

Camera

The S10 and S10+ flagships use three cameras with different focal lengths, and in the S10e, the South Korean manufacturer has removed one of the modules. We are talking about the telephoto module. So in the small "ten" there are only two modules in the main unit. The main one is 12-megapixel with variable aperture f/1.5-2.4, EFP 26 mm, sensor size 1/2.55″, pixels 1.4µm. Focusing is assigned to Dual Pixel PDAF. Optical stabilization is available.

The additional module is super wide-angle - 16 MP, with f/2.2. The viewing angle is 123 degrees. This module is devoid of autofocus and optical stabilization.

The main module shoots expectedly well in virtually any conditions. In daylight, the smartphone shows a high level of detail and excellent color rendering. The dynamic range is decent. As shooting conditions worsen, details become less. This is an expected result. To say that the S10e's camera is bad would be a lie.

The super-wide-angle module does an excellent job of accommodating more objects in a single frame.

With this Samsung smartphone, the user can shoot video at maximum UHD resolution at 60 frames per second. The super slow motion photo is at 960 frames per second.

The front camera of the Galaxy S10e is a 10-megapixel camera. It is capable of taking pictures with a blurred background. You can maximize the viewing angle by pressing the corresponding button on the screen. With the front camera, video is in UHD resolution, maximum 30 frames per second.

Autonomous operation

The S10e has a 3100 mAh battery. This compares to 3400 mAh in the S10 and 4100 mAh in the S10+. For the first time for Samsung, an adaptive battery load mode has been implemented. The result is longer battery life. When this mode is turned off, the autonomous work noticeably decreases to the standard indicator - one day.

The Galaxy S10e charges to 58% in half an hour, and to 100% in an hour and 20 minutes. The device supports the PowerShare feature.

Conclusion

The Galaxy S10e is a beautiful and comfortable flagship. It features a gorgeous display and is high on performance. The quality of the cameras is at a 2019 flagship level. The device can be termed as affordable in terms of price.

The Galaxy S10e has got a smaller battery capacity, less RAM, less amount of cameras, fingerprint scanner elsewhere and a different screen shape compared to the Galaxy S10 Plus. However, that doesn't make it any less worthy. In most cases, the model performs the same functions as the S10 Plus.

Moreover, this Samsung model attracts with its compactness.
